Trying Broadband Characterization at Home
نویسندگان
چکیده
In recent years the quantity and diversity of Internet-enabled consumer devices in the home have increased significantly. These trends complicate device usability and home resource management and have implications for crowdsourced approaches to broadband characterization. The UPnP protocol has emerged as an open standard for device and service discovery to simplify device usability and resource management in home networks. In this work, we leverage UPnP to understand the dynamics of home device usage, both at a macro and micro level, and to sketch an effective approach to broadband characterization that runs behind the last meter. Using UPnP measurements collected from over 13K end users, we show that while home networks can be quite complex, the number of devices that actively and regularly connect to the Internet is limited. Furthermore, we find a high correlation between the number of UPnPenabled devices in home networks and the presence of UPnP-enabled gateways, and show how this can be leveraged for effective broadband characterization.

Let’s Make a Deal: Price Sensitivity and Optimal Subsidies among Broadband Non-adopters
Although nearly every American household has access to a broadband network, nearly one in three American homes still do not subscribe to the service. For many households the cost of home broadband service is the barrier that prevents them from subscribing. As the federal government joins with broadband service providers and non-profit groups to determine the best way to overcome this cost obsta...
متن کاملBroadband Characterization of Indoor Powerline Channel
For data communication over any medium, it is necessary to determine the characteristics of the communication channel. Powerline channel has been considered as a medium not only for low-rate, control purpose communication, but also for high-speed data communication, such as home networking and Internet access. In order to implement advanced communication technologies, the complete knowledge of ...
متن کاملThe Ability of Ultrasonic Characterization to Extract the Dose Distribution of MAGIC-f Polymer Gel
Background & Aims: Today, different imaging techniques have been studied in the reading of radiationsensitive polymer gels dosage. Due to limitations of imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT), ultrasound techniques are proposed for dose-dependent parameter extraction. In this study, using MAGIC-f (methacrylic and ascorbic acid in gelatin initiat...
متن کاملThe Last Mile: Wireless Technologies for Broadband and Home Networks
Until recently, limitations of the access networks have been the major obstacle to the “digital networked house”. The well-known “last mile problem” has hindered an effortless broadband access at home and, therefore, has impacted the home networking applications. However, recent advances in transmission and broadband access technologies are very promising and are capable of bringing information...
متن کاملBroadband consumer electronics networking and automation
Although a critical mass of households worldwide have access to the information superhighway, the broadband consumer networking and automation market is still evolving very slowly. Two reasons may be identified for this delay. The first one is related to the lack of broadband home data networks. Consumer electronics networks either do not exist at all or they are not able to support multimedia ...
